Erroniously called the Paul Revere Lantern, this is probably the most recognizable of all tin lanterns. The pierced lantern was used to carry the lit candle to places such as a barn or outhouse, so as to protect the flame. These lanterns had their origins in Europe. They remained quite popular until the proliferation of cheap glass made them obsolete. Tinsmiths used the pierce work to express themselves artistically, coming up with many designs. Our designs are based on these historical patterns.
