The everyman sconce is a reproduction of a standard design used by several different Tinsmiths in the late 1800's.  Several of these candleholders would be spread out around a room to light a tavern or a workman's home. This a classic style of sconce. The top is derived from the French fleur-de-lis. The curved top deflects the heat from the candle, allowing is it to be placed closer to the ceiling. When one discovers the multitude of designs of tin sconces, one might conclude that no two tinsmiths made identical sconces. The designs ranged from the very simple with just a rectangular piece of tin ton the very complex with leaves and mirrored glass. Typically, tin sconces were used in taverns, churches and meeting halls -- anyplace where diffused lighting was needed. Today, they make great accents to rooms containing antique furniture. They are particularly useful for decorating hallways and stairways or displaying in pairs on either side of a fire place.
