Tinware FAQ
Here are some common questions about tin.

What is Tin?- Tin is a metallic element mined from places like Bolivia. Historically the tin that was used in North America came from Cornwall, England.

Is the material pure tin?
No the material is made from flat sheets of steel that are covered with tin.

Does tin rust?
The answer to that is Yes and No. Tin does not rust but the steel underneath it will if the tin becomes scratched or worn away. The edges of the material are also prone to rusting. In normal usage your tinware should not rust.

Is lead solder used in the tinware you sell?
We do use lead solder (50% Lead, 50% Tin) in applications where the item would not be used with food. Lead solder is the best type to use with tinplate. It easily makes a strong, flexible, inexpensive seam. Food items are soldered with a lead-free solder (96.5% tin, 4.5% silver). It is a more difficult solder to use, and is much more expensive. If you have any concerns relating to lead please contact us.

How do I look after tinware?
To care for your tinware: wipe with a soft cloth. Tinware can be washed with dish soap, but not in a dishwasher. Dry thoroughly after use. Ammonia and water may also be used. Polishing can be done with a non-abrasive metal cleaner. Do not attempt to polish antiqued pieces.
