Our story begins with our founder Greg Pietersma embarking on a mission to learn to be a tinsmith. This took him to Upper Canada Village where he started as assistant tinsmith. While working there his desire to learn from the best took him to Eastfield Village to study with Master Tinsmith William McMillen.

Over the next couple of years Greg continued to practice at the Village and receive instruction from McMillen. It was during this period that Greg discovered Tin Tinsel. This unique Christmas decoration was probably first by tinsmiths for their own trees in Victorian times. While selling his goods at local craft shows Greg would make pieces of tinsel as a demonstration. Customers loved the tinsel. One day a customer bought 50 pieces, and requested something to put it in. The tinsel can was born! The tinsel in a can took off. Everybody wanted it.

It became obvious that Greg would need some help- The Pietersma Tinworks was born. The Company had its start in 1991 as The Tin Shop. At that point Greg still worked at Upper Canada Village. Every fall once the Village season was over Greg would hire a few staff to help him prepare for the Christmas season. The Tin Shop grew rapidly and eventually Greg had to give up his position as Tinsmith to work in the business full time. In 1995 Greg incorporated the business and his wife, Amanda joined him to help with the growing amount of paper work and with growing staff.

To this day Greg and Amanda continue to own and operate The Pietersma Tinworks. They also find time to do lots of community work. Greg is a School Trustee and chairperson for The Upper Canada Dirstrict School Board.
